The European Summer Academies are based on the collaboration of a number of European Popular Universities. Since 2004 they have taken place in a different part of Europe, with people from different countries coming together for a week of study, meetings and various cultural events. The Academy offers a unique opportunity, linking common experiences to an unusual approach to lesser-known aspects of the host city and its culture. A sense of history and everyday life is transmitted to participants in excursions that go off the beaten track permitting them to bring their own personal experiences to what is new and extraneous.
Teachers of various nationalities offer courses and activities in diverse disciplines to make new learning experiences possible along with the pleasure of discovering Rome and its surrounding region. The European Summer Universities are open to all interested persons, including those who are not fluent in other languages. The idea of the Academy is based on the concept of solidarity and flexibility on the part of all the participants and on the common search for innovative solutions. Content is transmitted in part with instructors teaching in their native language – and often in one or two other languages as well – and in part with the active linguistic contribution of the participants from the different countries.
Upter (Università Popolare di Roma) is tremendously pleased to welcome all those participating in the 6th European Summer Academy. We believe that Rome and its Region are the ideal place to experience the spirit of this European initiative together: the wealth of diversity brought by the participants and the encounter of people, languages and cultures with past and present as a window on the future will all make this edition a unique experience.

B1 ITALIAN CLASS FOR BEGINNERS
You have just arrived in this lovely eternal city, you don’t know any Italian and you want full immersion in the language in order to be able to communicate and participate in the local reality in a short time. Here is our proposal: spend a few hours in the classroom each morning to acquire the basic linguistic tools and then out you go into the streets! In the heart of Rome, with your teacher, you’ll be able to immediately put into practice what you have learned and deal with the most common everyday situations: introducing yourself, asking for and giving information, chatting to people in a typical bar, ordering a meal in a restaurant, doing some shopping at the market. Teacher FRANCESCA FERRARI, Italian teacher, Upter, Rome

B3 DIARY OF MY ARTISTIC JOURNEY
Exploring Rome: observing, re-discovering, creating images A practical art course for the creative spirit, for those who look about them with an open heart and a curious eye. We will visit both famous and lesserknown spots, delving into past and present – and at the same time getting to know people from different European countries. We will have fun learning the different artistic techniques (drawing, as well as frottage, collage, collection of objects, etc.) which will be the means of recording our impressions. We will thus create a lively and personal “diary of our journeys” to be shown in a final exhibition. No previous experience needed! Materials to be bought with the teacher at a cost of about € 8 Instructor REINHARD SPIELVOGEL, artist and Fine Arts instructor, Berlin, Reinhard@Spielvogel.de
B4 FRESCO WORKSHOP
Uncovering the past through observation and analysis of fabulous masterworks A practical-manual experience of old techniques with reflection amid glimpses of inspiring works of art that testify to the genius of great masters, whose productions show us the breadth of their imaginations and the speed and rigour of execution. Participants will rise to meet the challenge of learning the secrets of techniques that make it possible to appreciate the work of artists who made Rome so preciously beautiful. Ideas, inspiration, suggestions for refining one’s knowledge and a first approach to the fresco. Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli: these are some of the names that will take us beyond any and every pictorial technique! Presentation of materials and techniques; demonstration and execution of the different phases of realization; strolls amid churches and palazzi; introduction to restoration techniques. No previous experiences needed Materials approx € 10 Teacher ELENA GIACOMONI, Fresco teacher at public and private schools, elena.giacomoni@libero.it Languages Italian, English
B5 ART NOUVEAU JUGENDSTIL
We will begin by analyzing the works of famous artists, particularly those of the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) period, and proceed to compare the movement in Austria and Italy. We will then let our own compositions – in a free association of colour and form – take us along the paths travelled by the Art Nouveau movement and lead us to new and personal interpretations. We will find our inspiration in visits to the “Quartiere Coppedè” – a little known area that is truly a precious gem – and other interesting sights in this fascinating city. No previous experience needed Materials Everybody is to bring their own ( paper, pencils, watercolours…) Teacher BERTHILD ZIERL, painter and graphik designer, Wien Languages German, English
B6 THE GATES OF ROME
Art in the ancient cityscape The Roman ruins have attracted the best painters of landscape, panoramic views and tourist spots from 1700 to 1900. In particular, the gates in the city walls have enthralled great painters with their mysterious fascination. Because they are particularly well preserved and thus reward observation, it is the gates of the southern part of the city – the Prenestina, Asinara, Metronia, S. Pancrazio, Latina, Appia, S. Ostiense and Portuense gates – which offer the best possibilities for study through painting techniques compatible with the outdoor environment. The course offers a little perspective, a little technique and loads of enthusiasm. Required knowledge basic knowledge of painting or drawing. Materials please bring paper, pencils, pens and ink, or material for watercolour or oil paintings. Teacher LUIGI DE CINQUE, painter and teacher, Rome (www.luigidecinque.it) Languages Italian, English
B7 SEARCHING FOR TRACKS
Gods,Angels, Spirits of the Times Painting, Drawing, Collaging The Tiber is the ‘guiding thread’ that will accompany us through the Eternal City. Starting from the river, drawing and painting, we will discover the city landscape, the visible and the invisible, focussing on the millennia of the city’s history. We will be working on small-size, travel-formatted fanfold paper, that can be instantly transformed into large-size working-formats. Meeting point on the 1st course day San Bartolomo all’Isola on Tiberina Island Previous knowledge useful but not compulsory Materials pencils, chalk, drawing ink, watercolours, cover white, paint brush, glue stick, collage material The fanfold paper will be prepared by the teacher. Teacher Uschi Niehaus, painter, Berlin Languages German, English, French

B8 ROMAN HOLIDAY
Participants in the course will be guided in filming in the places where William Wyler shot his famous film, “Roman Holiday”. In the various film locations, students will attempt to shoot the same scenes as well delve more deeply into aspects of permanence and change in those same places. Filming foresees the participation of two course participants by turns in the guise of actors playing the parts acted by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in the original film. The course includes a first lesson in the classroom – where the relevant parts of the film will be viewed and organizational aspects decided – , three field lessons and a final meeting in the classroom to view the work of the students. Required previous knowledge knowing how to start filming with a camera. Materials amateur camera Instructor ANGELA CANNIZZARO, teacher of cinema and direction, Rome, angela.cannizzaro@iloveroma.it Languages Italian, English
B9 STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
The course aims to develop each participant’s aptitude for photography and to channel the various separately developed themes and experiences into a single learning path, with the encounter of different cultures being the added value of the course. Students will produce a photographic essay on the specific theme of the Roman cityscape viewed through the lens of comparison and juxtaposition of the various historical periods in order to refine and hone methodologies of photography and visual communication. The course includes three field lessons alternating with two classroom lessons to view the photographs produced. Communication with students will be carried out using Italian and English, but of course the most effective form of interpersonal communication in this course will be visual. Previous knowledge none Materials analogical or digital camera, cost of any printing to be sustained by participants, Instructor PAOLA BORDONI, Photography Instructor, Rome, paola_bordoni@yahoo.it Languages Italian, English, French

B13 DIARY FROM THE HEART
Chronicles of the soul, dancing on the tip of your pen amid the marvels of the Eternal City. Course in Autobiographical and Emotional writing Feelings, heartbeats flowing from the tip of your pen in new flashes of creativity to share with others: this is what is being offered in this Course of Autobiographical and Emotional Writing. An experience to savour the marvels of the Eternal City through our inner being, to throw a bridge across the world of the soul and the enthralling spell of immortal places, in order to discover – in the words of Proust – that “ the true journey of discovery is not travelled by seeking new places, but by gazing [upon the old] with new eyes“. A journey that will permit us to experience Rome by finding our inner selves. We will set out, a group of travellers of the soul, all together and yet each in tune with our inner selves, armed with diaries, to savour the magical enchantment of a landscape in which we will see our own beauty reflected. Through parks and churches, timeless, mythical and historical places, we will recount an adventure that will remain impressed in our hearts and minds. A selection of passages written spontaneously, to leave traces and to share feelings experienced during the course will be collected into a ‘living‘ shared diary. No previous writing experience required. Teacher MONICA AMARINI COLOSIMO, Rimini, monica.colosimo@yahoo.it Languages Italian, English

Docente CLAUDIO CASSETTI, guida e ricercatore urbano, Berlino, http://documentation.senzarete.de /html/staedtebabuschka.html Lingue tedesco, italiano
B16 THE ROMAN ROOTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
Like no other city, Roma embodies the creative synthesis of history and modernity. In this course we will learn to recognize how modern Europe was built on Roman-Christian ideals and norms by visiting places that symbolize this historical process. The dramatic evolutionary history of the “late nationstates” – Italy and Germany – will be illustrated. Franco Fatigati will depict the geopolitical consequences these new states had for the balance-ofpower system in 19th century Europe. We will visit the places where the Treaty of Rome, whitch paved the road to today’s European Union, was conceived, written and signed. This agreement led to the development of democracy in both Italy and Germany. Teacher Dr. Rer. POL CHRISTOPH ROHDE, political scientist, Munich, www.christoph-rohde.de; FRANCO FATIGATI, teacher of geopolitics, Upter Rom Languages German, English, Italian
